Psalm 120
Repentance

Psalm 120

A song of ascents.

I call on the Lord in my distress,
    and he answers me.
Save me, Lord,
    from lying lips
    and from deceitful tongues.

What will he do to you,
    and what more besides,
    you deceitful tongue?
He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows,
with burning coals of the broom bush.

Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek,
that I live among the tents of Kedar!
Too long have I lived
    among those who hate peace.
I am for peace;
but when I speak, they are for war.

A Pilgrimage with the Psalms of Ascent - Repentance

Summer brings a change of rhythm, a sense of adventure, and a taste of something different. With change comes the opportunity to pause and consider where we are and where we are trying to go. The Psalms of Ascent (Psalm 120-134) have been used for generations to help remind God’s people that life is a pilgrimage toward an eternal destination. Dwelling in these psalms gives us the opportunity to pause and consider the path we are on, and who or what drives us each day. Psalm 120 begins the ascent with the recognition of our need for repentance - a turning away from where we are, and a turning toward the one who can make us whole. Psalm 120 reminds us that no matter how bad our present circumstance, there is one whom we can turn to because he hears our calls of distress and answers them.
