Scripture: Luke 22:7-8, 13-24
Message: Our Gospel Life: Eating
Speaker: Pastor Tyler Graftaas

Gathered around the table at the appointed time to share in an expected ceremonial meal, remembering for the millionth time that God rescued his people from Egypt. “Why do we do this Father?” Would be the anticipated question, ”we were once slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt and the Lord brought us out with a strong hand.” had been the prescribed reply given by the Lord so many centuries ago.

Meals shared around tables provide all sorts of opportunities. Opportunities for the expected enjoyment of a favourite meal, and opportunities for the unexpected sharing of thoughts that have been on someone’s mind for a while. The last Passover meal that Jesus shared with his disciples was filled with both. They entered into the ritual ceremony that had been shared for generations remembering the mighty and saving hand of the Lord, but were undoubtedly shocked to hear Jesus say, “this is my body and blood, poured out for you.”

This Sunday as we gather for worship and partake together in the Lord’s supper, as we routinely do the first Sunday of the month, let us anticipate the unexpected work of God who said, “do this in remembrance of me.
